Fourteen years later, the dream came true, and Richard refused his master's offer of his daughter's hand in marriage and a dowry fortune if he would stay with them in Barbary. Instead, he chose to make the hazardous return journey to Claddagh.

In Ireland once more, Richard created the first of his iconic Claddagh rings for his childhood sweetheart and future wife, choosing the hands to represent their friendship, the crown, their loyalty, and the heart, their undying true love that ultimately conquered all.
