In the late 17th century, the town was a small fishing village and home to Richard Joyce, the original creator of the famous Claddagh design. He left his home in 1675 to seek his fortune overseas but was captured by Barbary pirates en route and sold into servitude on the African north coast. 

Richard never gave up on his goal of returning home to the girl he left behind and spent the next 14 years mastering his trade as a jeweler and goldsmith, waiting for his opportunity to come. In 1689, his impossible dream came true.
