In 1675, a youthful Richard Joyce set out to make his fortune overseas in the British West Indies. As luck would have it, the Irishman's vessel was taken by a North African pirate ship, and he was sold into slavery on the Barbary Coast. He spent the next 14 years working for his master as a jeweler and goldsmith but never gave up on his dream of returning home to Claddagh village on Galway Bay. 

In 1689, Richard's dream became reality, and his former master, keen to retain his skills, offered him a dowry fortune and his daughter's hand in marriage if he would stay, but nothing could prevent him from making the perilous journey home. 

When he returned to Ireland, he created the original Claddagh ring we know today for his childhood sweetheart and future wife.
