The determined Irishman was destined to remain there, working for his master as a jeweler and goldsmith for the next 14 years, but never gave up on his dream of one day returning to Ireland. In 1689, his freedom came, and his master, desperate to retain his services, offered Richard his daughter's hand in marriage and a fortune if he would remain with them in Barbary. His resolve never faltered and he chose instead to make the perilous journey home. Safe in Galway once more, he crafted the first of his iconic rings for his long-lost childhood sweetheart and future wife.
