Connemara marble is estimated to have been formed in Ireland more than 900 million years ago, and the first quarries were opened in 1820. Since then, the rare material has been used to create items of exceptional beauty and is highly valued for its haunting natural color tones

It’s creator, Richard Joyce, was en route to the British West  Indies in 1675 when Barbary pirates captured his vessel, and he, along with everyone else on board, was sold into slavery in North Africa. The young Irishman spent 14 long years in servitude mastering his trade as a craftsman and goldsmith but never gave up hope of returning to his hometown and childhood sweetheart. 

In 1689, Richard’s faith was rewarded, and he handcrafted the first Claddagh ring for his future wife, who remained loyal to him despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that came between them.
